With Dog Training Helping Your Dog To Realize His Potential

If you have never tried to train an animal, the idea may be rather intimidating. While there are some things you need to know, there are plenty of resources for a beginner at dog training. Here are some smart tips to get you started with effective dog training.

It is important to be consistent with the command that you give your dog for each of his specific behaviors. Your dog can learn to associate a command with a particular behavior, but if you keep changing the command associated with a behavior, you’ll confuse him and he won’t do what you want him to do. Consistency is very important. It ensures that the dog will respond properly to commands.

Use good treats that are irresistible to your dog. A treat that is normally forbidden, such as table scraps or cheese, is a great choice.

You may want to consider training your dog to grasp a toy with his mouth. Start by using a clicker and treating him every time he picks up a toy in his mouth. After repeating this a few more times, wait until the dog picks up his toy again. As soon as the dog does this, use the clicker and give a reward. Only give a reward if the toy is actually held in his mouth.

Use the appropriate tone of voice when you are correcting your pet. Dogs are often closely attuned to a trainer’s mindset and feelings. Back up your discipline with a stern, but not angry, tone of voice to communicate your displeasure.

The simplest way to prevent a dog-in-training from destroying all your stuff is to put him outside when you aren’t present. If it is too cold out, or you can’t leave the puppy outdoors for some other reason, you will just have to do your best to make his favorite objects out of reach. Leave him in one room with the door closed, and leave him some toys that are okay to chew on.

Be aware of what foods and treats your dog loves the most. Using your dog’s favorite food to reward him will give him more incentive to train hard. Really pay attention to his reaction when he is given the treat and adjust your reward foods accordingly.

Be careful not to spend too much time at once training your dog. Remember that a dog has a short attention span and cannot focus on one thing for too long. Try to keep the initial sessions limited to about 10 minutes.

Most dogs have anxiety as a reason for chewing. Placing the dog in a safe environment such as a dog crate and providing a chew toy keeps the dog safe and occupied until your return.

Always use your dog’s name when you want its attention. You will have more control over an obedient, well-trained animal. Call your dog by name 10 times each day until he readily responds to your voice with no further encouragement. Never reprimand your dog for giving you its attention when you say its name.

Hopefully, you have gained some knowledge from these tips. Following the advice contained in this article will lead to your being a happy canine owner with a properly trained companion.
